Aluminium vs. Fibreglass Truck Canopies: Which Lasts Longer?
Share
When choosing a hard truck canopy, the biggest decision is material: aluminium or fibreglass. Both work, but they behave very differently over time.
Weight
Aluminium is significantly lighter than fibreglass. That means less strain on your truck, better fuel economy, and easier one-person handling. Heavy fibreglass caps can eat into your payload.
Durability & rust
Aluminium doesn't rust and shrugs off dents and impacts better than brittle fibreglass, which can crack or spider in cold Canadian winters. Powder-coated aluminium keeps its finish for years.
Security
A rigid aluminium shell with lockable doors and windows is hard to break into. Fibreglass locking hardware can be less robust.
Repairs
Dented aluminium panels are straightforward to fix or replace. Cracked fibreglass often needs specialist body repair and repainting.
Rack & accessory mounting
Aluminium canopies readily accept crossbars for roof racks, rooftop tents and kayaks. Many fibreglass caps aren't rated for heavy roof loads.
Cost
Entry-level fibreglass can be cheaper up front, but aluminium's longevity, low weight and resale value usually make it the better long-term buy.
The verdict
For Canadian weather, work and overland use, aluminium is the more durable, practical choice. Our canopies are powder-coated aluminium, weather-sealed, and fitted with no drilling — with mobile install across BC's Lower Mainland.
